Let me start with a confession. I have watched - from a front-row seat, across industries, across continents - what happens when the distance between knowing and doing collapses.
I have seen it happen slowly over two decades of enterprise transformation, and I have watched it happen in a single year because of AI.
Here is the uncomfortable truth that nobody in the industry wants to say plainly: AI has made it terrifyingly easy to sound like you know what you’re doing. Not to actually know. Just to sound like it. And in the space between those two things- that thin, dangerous gap - real harm is being done.
A world where the credential has been decoupled from the competence
A developer with six months of experience is shipping production microservices architectures because GitHub Copilot filled the gaps. A first-time founder is writing enterprise go-to-market strategies because a LLM gave them a deck that looked like McKinsey produced it. A wellness influencer is prescribing supplement stacks with the confidence of a clinician because they asked an AI and got a well-formatted, cited-sounding answer. None of them are lying. None of them are even necessarily wrong - yet. But the “yet” is doing enormous structural weight in that sentence.
The pattern isn’t new. Every technology disruption creates a wave of people who mistake access to tools for mastery of craft. What is new-what makes this moment genuinely different from the rise of Google, or calculators, or even the internet - is the plausibility gap.
AI doesn’t just give you information. It gives you information formatted, structured, and communicated in a way that is almost indistinguishable from expert output. The scaffolding looks like the building.

That combination - deep expertise plus powerful tools is genuinely transformative. What concerns me is the other combination: shallow familiarity with tools, and the social license being granted to act as if that equals expertise.
Why first principles aren’t optional
First principles thinking is not an academic concept. It is the mechanism by which experts catch what AI cannot.
When a seasoned architect looks at an AI-generated structural calculation, they don’t just check the numbers - they run it against intuitions built from years of failures, edge cases, and near-misses that never made it into any training dataset.
When an experienced clinician reads a patient’s labs, they weigh values against a history, a story, a human context that no AI has access to.

Those edges are where the real damage happens. The edge is where the unusual case sits. The edge is where the system fails. The edge is where someone has to know- not just recall, not just retrieve, but genuinely know - what to do.
Education still matters. Not because it confers status, not because credentials gate-keep effectively, but because the process of deep education is how humans develop the intuitive error-detection that AI lacks. Skipping that process while using AI to simulate its outputs is not innovation. It is structural debt, and it compounds exactly like financial debt does — invisibly, until suddenly it doesn’t.
The human cost of the Illusion
I want to be clear about something that gets lost in the abstraction of industry-level risk. When a non-clinician gives dangerous health advice with the confidence of AI-generated authority, a real person gets hurt. When an unqualified code architect deploys a security-compromised system because AI made them feel expert, real customer data gets exposed. When a financial advisor with six months of experience and a very good AI subscription puts a retiree’s savings in the wrong instruments, a real life gets damaged.
The stakes are not theoretical. The casualness with which we are collectively normalizing the gap between tool-use and expertise is not a technology story. It is a values story. It is a question about what we believe competence is, what we believe accountability means, and whether we are willing to protect the people who deserve the real thing.

The answer is not to slow down AI adoption. The answer is to be honest with organizations, with teams, with ourselves - about what the tool is and what it isn’t. AI is the most powerful cognitive amplifier humans have ever built. Like every amplifier, it makes the good better and the bad worse. The signal and the noise both get louder.
Responsible adoption means using AI inside a frame of genuine expertise, not instead of one. It means organizations investing in deep domain knowledge at the same time as AI capability. It means being willing to say to someone: “You are very good at using these tools, and you do not yet have the foundation to own this outcome.” That is not gatekeeping. That is leadership.
It also means the people who have built deep expertise over long careers resisting the temptation to undervalue what they have. The years of pattern recognition, of failure and recovery, of developing intuition through consequence - that is not obsolete. It is, in an AI-saturated world, the rarest and most valuable thing there is.
The race to adopt AI is real, and the urgency is legitimate. But speed without foundation is not velocity - it is acceleration toward a wall. The most important thing we can do, individually and institutionally, is insist that the foundation comes first. Not because it is traditional. Because without it, nothing built on top of it will hold.
